Hennepin Healthcare is pleased to offer 2-year ACGME accredited Clinical Informatics Fellowship positions. These fellowship positions are open to physicians who will have completed a residency in any specialty other than Pathology prior to starting the fellowship.
Clinical informatics is a relatively new subspecialty of medicine. While physicians have been practicing CI for many years, formal board certification and accredited fellowships have only been available since 2013. Hennepin Healthcare CI fellowship has been accredited since 2018.
The fellowship is organized and implemented through Hennepin Healthcare and the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. Fellows will work closely with our Faculty of physician and team of informaticians, EHR specialists, Analytics Center for Excellence, and our system’s leadership. Didactic support will supplement the clinical experiences to ensure that fellows are fully exposed to the clinical informatics curriculum. Fellows will have opportunities to research into information systems solutions and also have the opportunity to explore entrepreneurial aspects of health IT.

What Sets Us Apart?
Rotations at Hennepin Healthcare and VAMC allows exposure to two different EHR’s and ancillary clinical systems. There is also the opportunity to do electives at ICSI (Institute for Clinical and Scientific Improvement) on developing Clinical Decision Support Guidelines across Care systems.

Our Course Faculty are clinicians who are all Board Certified in Clinical Informatics and other Faculty who have PhD in the field of analytics and IT.
Hennepin Healthcare has achieved HIIMS stage 7 certification in the use of Technology for Healthcare delivery for the Hospital. We also have a state of the art Simulation Center that integrates technology as well as an Analytics Center of Excellence. We have a dedicated performance Improvement LEAN methodology team as well.
Fellows in the 2-year program will pursue a long-term Scholarly research project in an area specific to Informatics. Additionally, they will participate in Clinical Research related to predictive analytics, clinical Decision support, and EHR related process improvement projects.

***Only completed email submissions will be considered for admission. The admissions committee will review applications and selected applicants will be invited for an onsite interview at Hennepin Healthcare.
Selection criteria will include academic track record; personal statement including research/career goals and how clinical informatics will enhance their opportunities in their chosen field; reference letters; and interviews. The proposed training will equip fellows with the necessary knowledge and technical skills to tackle everyday data management issues and guide large informatics projects while focusing on systems-level improvements in care delivery through the use of data analytics, clinical decision support, and data visualization. Prior experience with the use of Clinical Informatics principles to drive process improvement is a plus but not a requirement.

About Our Facility
The Clinical Informatics Fellowship is based at Hennepin Healthcare, one of the premier public teaching hospitals in the country. Our campus in Downtown Minneapolis spans five city blocks and houses in-patient and ambulatory services, our Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, numerous specialty clinics, and our ambulatory senior care clinic. As a public hospital, Hennepin Healthcare serves a multicultural patient population, including the region’s urban and underserved individuals.
The Minneapolis VA Health Care System is an affiliated teaching hospital which serves as the tertiary referral center for the Veterans Integrated Service Network 23. It has 309 beds. The medical center provides primary, specialty, mental and behavioral health, and extended care and rehabilitative care to over 80,000 veteran patients. It has one of the largest education and training programs in the VA system in various medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties.
