About the Program
Founded in 1995, the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Fellowship combines best-of-breed clinical, administrative, and field experience in both urban and suburban EMS environments. Our fellows take an active, hands-on role in Hennepin EMS, as well as a suburban fire department EMS service. Fellows practice in Hennepin Healthcare’s state-of-the-art Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center. Our fellows gain specialized experience in mass gathering/event medicine, urban search and rescue, disaster preparedness as well as field care and tactical EMS.
The EMS fellowship received ACGME accreditation in 2013. Upon completion of the program, graduates are well qualified to become an EMS Medical Director, instruct pre-hospital providers, respond to incidents in the field, and become an expert in disaster preparedness.
About Our Faculty
EMS often bridges both medicine and public safety. Our EMS faculty bring diverse expertise and perspectives to the program. Faculty have served as medical directors for SWAT teams and fire departments, as EMS agency heads, on-scene medical directors at major events/gatherings.
Four full-time faculty lead the EMS fellowship. Dr. Nick S. Simpson is the Medical Director of Hennepin EMS.

Dr. Gregg A. Jones, EMS Associate Fellowship Program Director, Assistant Medical Director, Hennepin Emergency Medical Services; Assistant Medical Director for Edina Fire. Dr. Jones serves as Medical Director for the Hennepin County Sheriff’s office, Hopkins Police and Fire Department as well as serving on MN Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue Team. He completed medical School at Oregon Health and Science University and Emergency Medicine Residency training at HCMC in 2018. Prior to going to school, Dr. Jones served in the US Army, which included two combat tours to Afghanistan. Dr. Jones’s current medical interests include medical directing for large-scale events, mass casualty incident planning, paramedic education, provider wellness and the interface between prehospital medicine and law enforcement.
Dr. John L. Hick, Assistant Medical Director, Hennepin Emergency Medical Services; Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School; Advisor to the Director, Office of Emergency Management/Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and Medical Advisor for Emergency Preparedness, University of Minnesota Academic Health Center. In addition, Dr. Hick serves as Medical Director for Metro Region HHS Hospital Preparedness Program Grant, Office of Emergency Preparedness, Minnesota Department of Health, and Emergency Preparedness, Hennepin Healthcare.
Dr. Jeffrey D. Ho, Professor of Emergency Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School; Deputy Sheriff and Medical Director, Meeker County (Minnesota) Sheriff’s Office. Within Hennepin Healthcare, Dr. Ho also serves as Vice-Chair of Operations for the Emergency Medicine Department, and Medical Director for Hennepin Healthcare Department of Security, and Hennepin Healthcare Sexual Assault Resource Services.
Dr. Paul D. Nystrom, Assistant Medical Director, Hennepin Emergency Medical Services; Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School; Medical Director of Edina Fire and Rescue. Dr. Nystrom is also Medical Director for the Plymouth (MN) Police Department and attached to the Plymouth SWAT team. He also serves as the Medical Director for the Minneapolis Police Department SWAT Team, MN Task Force 1, and six local fire departments.
What Sets Us Apart?
Dedicated ambulance service.
EMS owns and operates the dispatch center and ambulance fleet that covers 911-response for the City of Minneapolis and more than 700,000 residents in Hennepin County. EMS fellows take an active role in all operational, medical, and administrative aspects of this critical program. EMS responds to over 100,000 calls each year and conducts over 80,000 transports.
Regional partnerships with fire, police, air transport.
EMS fellows also gain valuable experience with first responder agencies and hundreds of paramedics in the west metro EMS system, including public utility and private operations, as well as a rotor and fixed wing air medical transport service.
Specialized field experience.
Fellows provide support to the paramedics, engage in direct patient care and add to the oversight and teaching of paramedics. Fellows also participate in operations with the state Urban Search and Rescue team, MN Task Force 1.
Pioneering emergency services.
Emergency personnel train for complex situations using the advanced equipment in our Interdisciplinary Simulation and Education Center. Hennepin Healthcare’s medical education programs train more than 12,000 paramedics and other emergency personnel each year.
Leadership and teaching opportunities.
EMS fellows collaborate daily with physicians, specialists, medical students, and other healthcare professionals in emergency medicine and other disciplines. There are ample opportunities for leadership and teaching in connection with the regional EMS council and Hennepin EMS Emergency and Critical Care Education center.
Dedicated Response Vehicle for Fellows
EMS fellows attend a formal Emergency Vehicle Operations Course and utilize a dedicated emergency response vehicle which is outfitted to assist patient care in the field, including ultrasound.

- Three letters of recommendation from residency faculty, with at least one from a practicing EMS physician
- Residency training examination scores from all years of training

- Why you would be a good fit for Hennepin Healthcare’s program

This fellowship accepts only graduates of an Emergency Medicine Residency at an ACGME-accredited institution. International candidates are welcome to apply, however, this program does not sponsor visas.
- Submission: Submit your application by email directly to our fellowship coordinator. Please note that this fellowship accepts only graduates of an ACGME-accredited residency in Emergency Medicine.
- Telephone interviews: Selected applicants will be contacted for telephone interviews with the program director and/or assistant program director.
- Finalist candidates. Selected applicants will be invited for in-person interviews. We hold interviews from June through October. Candidates are responsible for travel and lodging expenses to attend interviews.

The EMS fellowship is based at the main HCMC campus in downtown Minneapolis. Hennepin Healthcare provides inpatient and ambulatory services, our Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, Certified Burn Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Certified Center and numerous specialty clinics—all within a single facility that spans five city blocks.
